Obituary for Mary Ann Swenning (Rodgers)

Mary Ann Swenning (Rodgers)
Mary Ann (Rodgers) Swenning, 88, passed away peacefully on February 10, 2022, at the home of her daughter, Melody Marquez, in Midlothian, TX after a long battle with Alzheimer’s. Melody’s family has cared for Grandma/Granny for the past 4 years. Mary Ann was a loyal friend, a caring mother, and a doting grandmother and great-grandmother. Her passing will be sorely grieved her many family members and friends, yet we rejoice at her arrival in a better place.

Mary Ann (April 28, 1933) grew up on a ranch outside the town of Rochelle, TX with parents Mart & Mable Rodgers, brother Hulen and sister Rebecca. She was a majorette in high school. After high school she attended nursing school. Mary Ann met Richard (Dick) Swenning at a church picnic. They fell in love within no time and were married June 24, 1951. Richard was a ranch helper after attending Texas A & M University for one year. Together they raised six children. Mary Ann and Dick moved to Grand Prairie in 1966 for Richard to work with the Grand Prairie Fire Department.
As soon as all their kids were school age, Mary Ann started to work with the Grand Prairie ISD in the cafeteria. Mary Ann loved having the same schedule as the kids so she didn’t miss any after school events such as scouts, sports and church gatherings. Mary Ann and Dick were always there to support their kids and grandkids! Everyone loved Grandma/Granny. Part of her everyday routine was tending to her flowers; she loved her flower garden. Even when she moved to Mountain Creek Retirement Living apartments, she had a flower garden on the outside deck.

Mary Ann was preceded in death by her husband Richard Leland Swenning, who passed away in 2011 and 4th child, Cindy Ann Swenning, who passed away in 1985. Survivors include her children Al Joel Swenning, Terry Don Swenning (Mary), Larry Kim Swenning, Nancy Jo Sutherland (Lee), and Melody LaRue Marquez (Danny); grandchildren Patrick Swenning (Lyndsi), David Swenning (Betty), Kelly Peters. (Matt), Holly Smith (Ethan), Christopher Swenning (Taylor) and Gabrielle Marquez; great-grandchildren J.R. Singer, Ashlee Singer, Grant Peters, Annaleigh Smith, Addison Smith, Duke Swenning, Dallas Swenning, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Mary Ann will be remembered for her loving compassion, and she set an example that for those who knew her shall never forget.

All friends and family are welcome to join us after the service at Melody & Danny’s house, 426 Brandi Ridge Dr. Midlothian, TX 76065.
