Obituary for Phyllis Arlene Cross (Lewis)

Phyllis Arlene Cross, nee Lewis, passed away peacefully on September 21, 2023 at Midlothian Healthcare Center, Midlothian, Texas, where she resided for the last three years. She was surrounded by loving family.

Phyllis was born June 5, 1930 in Syracuse, Kansas to Dwight and Leah Lewis. Her brother, Lin, was born in 1932. She married Norman Gene Challenner and raised four children, Catherine Lynn, Richard Lee, Phillip Lin, and Jeanne Anne.

Phyllis graduated from Arizona State University with a degree in secondary education. Much beloved by her students, she spent her career teaching high school home economics in Hurst,Texas. Phyllis had a lifelong love for travel. She extensively toured and lived in North and Central America as well as Europe. She also visited many other parts of the world. Phyllis was a lifelong seeker of wisdom and truth. She loved to share her enthusiasm for life with one and all.

Phyllis is preceded in death by daughter, Catherine Challenner. She is survived by brother, Lin Lewis, sons Richard Challenner and wife Mary, Phillip Challenner and wife Nena, daughter Jeanne Anne Nabavi and husband Hessam. Her grandchildren are Ryan Challenner, Aaron Challenner and wife Rachel, Omeed Nabavi and wife Ashley. Aaron and Rachel blessed Phyllis with a great granddaughter, Alice.

Phyllis's life will be celebrated in a private family gathering. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Meals on Wheels North Central Texas at www.mownct.org.
